As we step into a new year, perhaps it's time to ask ourselves: can we put our phones away and limit their use to only essential calls? Yes, it might mean missing out on constant updates and trivial messages — but maybe that’s exactly what we need.

Reducing communication overload can restore a sense of calm and help us gather the scattered pieces of our inner selves. Today, our lives feel fragmented, overwhelmed by a flood of unnecessary information fed to us by digital algorithms. This constant digital noise breeds anxiety and chaos. The manufactured urgency to stay constantly connected has created a toxic environment — one where we take relationships for granted and lose the joy of face-to-face connection. Meeting people in person no longer feels as special or fulfilling as it once did.

Let’s not forget that people thrived long before the age of smartphones. Work got done, relationships blossomed, and creativity thrived — often in more genuine ways. I’m not against technology; this comes from someone who’s probably used it a little too much and has now seen its darker side. Yes, there will be discomfort in stepping back — a strong urge to return to our screens. But that’s just the conditioning we've been subjected to. Breaking free from it might be the first step toward real healing.

Our digital habits, once exciting, have lost their charm. We've traded creativity for convenience. The natural rhythm of our minds — once full of imagination and originality — is now dulled by overstimulation. We don’t think as independently anymore; instead, we rely on pre-packaged information that shapes our thoughts, narrows our perspectives, and feeds us a carefully curated narrative. It’s a digital rat race, and many don’t even realize they’re in it.

A lot of the mental health struggles faced by today’s generation can be traced back to excessive screen time. If we don’t speak up about it, this vicious loop may never break. It’s a paralyzing force — one that blurs the line between right and wrong and strips us of the ability to think clearly. Yet, there are always those who can rise above — who see through the noise, decode the distraction, and recognize the artificial adrenaline rush as the illusion it is.

Escaping this digital matrix isn’t some grand feat. It simply starts with stepping out and reclaiming our time, our attention, and our presence. Maybe then, we’ll rediscover the real world — and ourselves — again.
